Schertzinger, Victor, composer, director, violinist; b. Mahanoy City, Pa., April 8, 1890; d. Hollywood, Calif., Oct. 26, 1941. ASCAP 1934. Of musical parents. Educ: Brown Prep School, Pa.; School of Music, Univ. of Brussels. At eight, debut as violinist with Victor Herbert Symph. Orch., Washington Paik, Pa. Made appearances as child prodigy with Herbert, Sousa and others. Early 'teens, toured Europe and U.S. Became director of orchestra Los Angeles theater; musical conductor Broadway musical shows for several years. Returned to Los Angeles theater as conductor; wrote musical score for picture, Civilization, one of first full length pictures to be presented with musical accompaniment. Gave up musical activities for motion picture direction.
